From Data to Social Media Platform Governance: What are the Issues and Possible Solutions?
December 4 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Digital social media platforms such as Facebook, Google and Twitter span the globe, serve billions of users, and now provide core societal functions, but the governance around their functions is ad hoc, incomplete and insufficient. And there are profound governance questions related to privacy, electoral integrity and even personal health.
In the past few years, the risks inherent in this ecosystem have made their way into public discourse, spurred by various high profile incidents of abuse particularly related to how personal data are used. The potential for social benefit exists, but those benefits hinge on trust, which in turn requires the swift development of a global governance framework.
In this lunchtime talk, CIGI’s Bob Fay will discuss the broader need for platform governance and what such a framework might look like, as well as CIGI’s efforts on this front in a global context.
The presentation will start promptly at noon, and will be preceded by a light lunch starting at 11:30am.Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/from-data-to-social-media-platform-governance-what-are-the-issues-and-possible-solutions-registration-80943188255.
