Online Violence – Redefining the ‘Trolling’ and ‘Cyberbullying’ Narratives

May 16 @ 10:30 pm - May 17 @ 12:30 am

Dear Friends,
It’s disturbing… but our political climate is stirring up hostility on and offline among a growing number of young white men, primarily directed toward those with feminist, anti-racist beliefs. When we give hateful words a platform under the guise of “objectivity” and ‘free speech’, we treat human rights as a matter of abstract theoretical debate. This kind of abstraction, partially based on the false idea that words do not cause harm, has very real consequences for women and many other marginalized groups. This talk will explore how gendered online harassment and other hateful and dehumanizing discourse causes palpable harm, and what we can do to build communities and institutions that uphold human rights.
In response to this, and in partnership with the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, we’re excited to be hosting guest speaker, Steph Guthrie! She is a feminist advocate, organizer and analyst focusing on the intersections of gender, culture, and technology. As founder of Women in Toronto Politics, she produces events and online resources to promote a more gender-inclusive civic discourse. She’ll be Redefining “Trolling” and “Cyberbullying” Narratives, and taking a closer look at online violence against women.
